Understanding Your Medicare Enrollment Periods
Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding when you can enroll or make changes to your coverage. At E.J. Insurance Services, we make it simple. Whether you’re turning 65, reviewing your plan for next year, or qualifying for a special enrollment period, we’ll help you understand your options and guide you through each step with clarity and care.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your Initial Enrollment Period is your first opportunity to sign up for Medicare. It begins three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after. During this seven-month window, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B, and explore your options for a Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Prescription Drug Plan (Part D).

If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare. Otherwise, you’ll need to apply directly through Social Security.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. This is the time to review your current Medicare plan and make changes for the following year. You can:
-
Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
-
Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
-
Add, drop, or change your Part D prescription drug coverage

Any changes you make during this period will take effect January 1 of the new year.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
The Open Enrollment Period takes place from January 1 to March 31 each year. This period is for people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and want to make one change - either switching to a different Advantage plan or going back to Original Medicare (with the option to add a Part D plan).
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Life changes can sometimes qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period, allowing you to enroll or change plans outside the standard windows. Common qualifying events include:
-
Moving to a new address that affects your coverage area
-
Losing employer or union coverage
-
Gaining new eligibility for Medicaid or Extra Help
-
Your plan ending its contract with Medicare
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, we can help determine your eligibility and guide you through the process.
